lumen: international, video & performance art festival, new york

LUMEN 2011
Saturday, JUNE 25th
6PM – 12AM @ Former Coastguard Site
(2-min walk from SI Ferry Terminal!)

LUMEN 2010 was the first international video, performance, and sound festival ever held in Staten Island, curated by Ginger Shulick. Based on the success of this first year, COAHSI has decided to hold it again in 2011.
LUMEN 2010 was the single largest contemporary art event in Staten Island’s history, drawing well over 1,000 people from all around NYC to this one-day event. There were over 50 artists and collectives that participated, including well-established artists such as Alix Pearlstein, Sean Capone, and Alex Villar as well as Nick Zedd and Steven Lapcevic. Every surface of the site was fully-utilized.

There was a mobile video lab called MLAB that operates in conjunction with Syracuse University that housed Nick Zedd’s videos, as well as videos by Scott Lewis and Gary Winter of the famous Scott & Gary Show; a selection of video offerings by the MWF Video Club, and a multimedia installation by sculptor Don Porcella. The main stage area featured looped videos by 17 artists from all over the world, and there were special video installations across the site in various locations.
In addition to the videos, there was a full-range of performance art events happening throughout the day, courtesy of Grace Exhibition Space in Brooklyn. These performance art events were integral to keeping audiences engaged, especially during the day time hours prior to the outside videos being screened.
Over the past year, COAHSI has received a plethora of positive feedback, both from artists, audiences, as well as press. Comments ranged from the pleasure of seeing the progression of videos from narrative to avant-garde and sound-based throughout the course of the day; the delicate nature of the sound pieces; the fact that every surface of the site was completely utilized; and that LUMEN drew a large crowd of NON-Staten Islanders across the harbor to relish the Staten Island art scene and landscape amongst our faithful local audience – something that COAHSI marks as a huge success.

LUMEN 2011 will be at a new venue this coming June. It will feature three guest curators and close to 100 artists from Staten Island and beyond. Sign up for email updates on this blog to keep your finger on the pulse – LUMEN 2011!
